Cannonball!
World’s Greatest Outlaw
road Race

By Brock Yates

2002, softbound, 281 pages, b&w and color photos

You have probably seen the movie starring Burt Reynolds and have read articles about the Cannonball races held in the 70’s. Now you can read the true story behind all five of the coast-to-coast races. Yes, there were participants masquerading as priests, a phony ambulance, and a chauffer driven Rolls Royce. The first race had an MGBGT (not in the movie) and Dan Gurney driving a Ferrari Daytona.
Yates writes about each race chronologically with various participants giving their accounts of the event. He also talks about the movie, which was originally written as a drama and scheduled to star Steve McQueen. A real salute to Washington’s solution to the 70’s gas crisis, the 55MPH national speed limit.

Monthly Shop Keeping

Email Notices from CMGC
Have you been receiving email each month from the club about upcoming club activities? If not, your email address is probably not on our “broadcast” list. This year, we have been sending email reminders of upcoming events near the beginning of each month, and we also use email to announce last minute changes to previously publicized events, or to inform members of important news. Many – but not all – members supplied their email address along with their membership renewal last Spring, and these are the addresses that we are using. If you would like to make sure that you are on the list, contact the secretary at secretary@chicagolandmgclub.com with your current email address. Also, please note that you have been/will be removed from our list if your address “bounces”, so instruct your spam filter to accept email from president@chicagolandmgclub.com in order to receive club announcements.

EBay Parts Sale Program Underway
As previously reported, the club has initiated a new program to sell off donated car parts on eBay. This function is similar to our library and tools programs in that it is intended to be of benefit to club members in an area that they may not pursue as individuals. We now have a “hot link” on the website “classified” page to the “for sale” items. Our intent is to – foremost – keep usable items out of the dumpster if they can be of use to a remote buyer. Current policy is to allow club members a brief horizon with one last shot at these items before they go online, so check the website “classified” page and link often to

keep abreast of available items. All sale proceeds accrue to the club. Also, if you have any old MG parts that you would like to donate to this club effort, contact either
Jim Evans at president@chicagolandmgclub.com
or Dave Evans (no relation) at
ebaymaster@chicagolandmgclub.com

Holiday Party
The CMGC will join with the VMGCC (Vintage MG Car Club) for a combined Holiday party this year on Saturday, December 6, to be held at Elmcrest Banquets in Elmwood Park, IL. This is the same site as previous CMGC parties. This will be an interesting and exciting event as it represents a joint venture - not a host/guest situation - of two groups with different traditions and perspectives on this type of event. We will jointly be working with the VMGCC to ensure that the combined event is pleasing to all. Watch the Driveline and website for details as they develop.

Natter ‘N Noggin -
The Last Two Trial Visit of the Search

Yes, that's right. It has been almost a year and we have no more “New Trial Visit” recommendations. I had thought that we found a real cool place right along I-294 in Des Plaines, but it didn't work out. The owner doesn't want to do separate checks. I guess that tells you how well they are doing and how much they want us to stop on in. So on Tuesday, September 9th we'll do Finn McCool's in Schaumburg one more time. We haven't had a Beer Garden N&N this year so hopefully the weather will cooperate so we can use their patio. Then in October we'll do the new Roundhead's in Lombard for a second time. After that it will be time to make a final decision.

The reservation is under the club's name and they know that we're not all arriving at the same time and they have no problem at all with separate checks.
