Chicagoland MG Club: Driveline November 2009

Leaf Peeper’s or
“The Last Dance”
Tuesday, October 27, 2009

And you thought it wasn’t going to happen. After all the delays, false starts, bad weather and schedule conflicts the Leaf Peepers Tour, aka The Last Dance, was finally held on October 27. Three die-hard tourers, yup the number dwindled to three, pressed on, starting in heavy fog. Olde Mother Nature

presented obstacles as long as she could, but finally relented and presented us with a beautiful sunny day.
The foliage was definitely past the peak. The colors changed dramatically in one day the previous week, only to have the trees stripped by rain and wind the next day. But, there was enough surviving and newly changed foliage to provide us with a passable show. See the photos here and on the website.
Barney Gaylord, Bill Reece and I covered a 240 mile circuit that took us across Jo-Daviess County to lunch at Galena, on to Wisconsin for the neo-traditional ice cream interlude at Dickeyville, a cold one at the Potosi Brewery and a taste of really good cheese at a factory in Beeville. The roads included some familiar paths from earlier tours blended in with new ones, all selected for scenes that provided good leaf peeping in addition to the fun factor (if only there had been more color!). And they were fun. Lots of hills and curves, the good old Georgetown bridge, tree canopies and wildlife. We got a close look at a Bald Eagle! Plus, Bill got his driving “fix” in his new steed (and a Growler from Potosi).
We had a really good time, proved the concept of the one-day color tour is sound and resolved to try again next year.

Chicago MG Holiday Party 2009
December 12, 2009
Elmcrest Banquets

The Chicagoland MG Club and the Vintage MG Car Club of Chicago are working together again for the 2009 Chicagoland MG Holiday Party. Can you think of a better way to start the Holiday Season than to enjoy a couple of drinks, dinner, some gifts, and maybe even another performance of the Abingdon Players together with all of your Chicago area MG friends?
The party will be on Saturday December 12, 2008 at 6:30 PM at Elmcrest Banquets by Biancalana's, 7370 W Grand Avenue, Elmwood Park IL 60707 - 708-453-3989. There is valet parking at the facilities parking lot, right across the street. Please note that unlike many, many previous years, this is not the first but the second Saturday in December.
The cost for members of both clubs is the same at $28/person, and both clubs will subsidize the evening a little bit. The Cash Bar will open at 6:30 and dinner will be served at 7:30. Dinner is the same for all and includes soup and salad for starters, followed by pasta, then chicken and beef with potatoes and vegetables for the family style main course, and Italian ice cream for desert. Please mark the registration form for the vegetarian option.
After the dinner we'll have an, optional, gift exchange. We encourage every guest to bring a small MG or Holiday gift (there is no real minimum or maximum but about $10 is a good guideline) When you bring a MG or Holiday gift, you are also getting one from a fellow member. The order of selecting will be determined by drawing raffle tickets. There will also be some small items provided by the clubs for those who are unable to bring a personal gift.
And last but not least, we may again see the Abingdon Players and Singing Magnettes. They had spectacular performances with great audience participation in 2007 and 2008, and hopefully an Elmwood Park engagement can be arranged again for this year.
After the formal program you are also invited to join us at TJ's Halftime, a small sports bar just down the road. It is only 1 mile west of Elmcrest on Grand Avenue (but the name of the town changes to River Grove)  The designated driver of each vehicle should be able to find a parking spot at their lot. TJ's Halftime, 8166 Grand Avenue, River Grove, IL 60171,

There are two more club events in November. Sorry for the omission from the printed copy of Driveline.

Fall Tune-Down and Chili Party
Sunday, November 8, 2009 - 10 am - 4 pm
82 King Drive - Streamwood, IL

This has been a big hit the last couple of years, so don't miss it. Cowboy has a low lift drive-over hoist so we can do some underbody inspection, maybe a few oil changes, some tune-up work or minor repairs. Bring your own parts, oil and a jug for oil disposal (and yes, you will take your own away). Chili and drinks will be provided.

Criuse to the Rock
Thursday, November 26, 2009

There is nothing better than to be driving our cars after everyone else has stopped driving theirs. We will have our traditional, “top down” cruise to celebrate the first automobile race in America on Thanksgiving Day in 1895.
We meet at the historical race monument (the rock) at 9:00 AM, the west side of the Museum of Science and Industry in historic Hyde Park. Expect there to be local cable TV coverage on the scene. There will be lunch afterward at Stage's Restaurant - 657 W 31st Street, Chicago, several blocks west of the Dan Ryan expressway
