CMGC Project Car
Update—October 2017

On Saturday afternoon, Tim Schafer and Bill Kalafu joined me to help rebuild & install clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder units. Upon installation, the car was started and found to be drivable. I drove it around the block, found all gears and synchro's seemed OK for both upshift and downshift.

It was found that the clutch mechanism did not operate correctly: pedal pressure sometimes very stiff, other times no resistance other times needed pumping. This was attributed to a problem with the slave cylinder, which had been noticed at rebuild time but thought to be inconsequential. It is also possible that the clutch pressure plate is collapsing.

After Tim and Bill left, I started to replace the slave cylinder with an extra unit I had on hand to isolate the true cause of the problem. Unfortunately, the rubber hose began to leak, which led to problems removing the rusted steel input line from the rubber hose. At this time, car will need a repair to the steel clutch input line involving splicing in a fresh section of tubing.

It was also noticed that turn-signal flasher, electric radiator fan, and the tach and temp gauges inoperative, —reason unknown but the car may have mouse damage to wires under the dash.

Next work activities will be: repair clutch line, trace down all electrical problems. After the clutch problem is identified, and wiring repairs can be estimated.

On 9/6/17, Jim Evans informed the CMGC staff that a buyer has come forth for the project car. The purchaser will pay what we have invested so far. The club will break even on this. The buyer has an MG that the body is shot but may be able to use some parts for this car. That would be keeping our promise to the donor that the car will not go to a junk yard.
