Secrets of Jo Daviess County and Beyond
July 11-13, 2008

northwest Illinois, southwest Wisconsin, northeast Iowa
Report from the 2007 tour in August Driveline

The third annual Secrets of Jo Daviess County Tour has been scheduled for the weekend of July 11-13, 2008. This year the name has an addendum. It will be Jo Daviess County - and Beyond. We’re going outside the county into southwest Wisconsin and Northeast Iowa to seek new hills and curves and views.
The MG enjoyable weekend will begin with an afternoon reception at the Lake Carroll home of the Hermans for those who wish to travel to the area on Friday. After the reception we’ll dine at the Yellow Creek Inn with the famous fish fry so popular last year. The host hotel for that night will again be the Country Inn and Suites at Stockton.
The Saturday launch will be from the Country Inn parking lot at 10 am. Our route will take us to a short winery stop then through some new venues in Jo-Daviess County before crossing into Wisconsin. We’ll use a ferryboat to cross the Mississippi River into Iowa. We’ll work our way along the river to a famous overlook of the juncture of the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers and end the day at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Dinner, lodging and parking lot party in PdC.
Sunday we’ll run cross-country in southwest Wisconsin with a destination of the ever-popular Baumgartner’s cheese store in Monroe. The tour breaks here and you will be free to choose your way home.

Arrangements:
We have a block of 20 rooms at the Country Inn in Stockton. It’s identified as MG Club and consists of 17 rooms with 2 Queen beds and three with King beds, all non-smoking. The rate for our club for a standard room is $98. If you qualify for AARP or other discounts the rate is $88. Other configurations may be available if you ask. The block expires at close of business June 11. The phone number is 815 947 6060. It’s better to call directly than to use their national reservation line. Ask for Wendy, but anyone there can help you.
If you wish to reduce the hotel cost for Friday night the Baymont Inn in Freeport has an ample number of rooms available at this writing. I did not establish a block there. The standard room with either 2 Double beds or one King is $80, $72 with AARP. Remember that this hotel is 20 miles east of the host location at Stockton.
At Prairie du Chien I’ve arranged a block of 20 rooms at the Brisbois Inn, phone 608 326 8404 or 800 356 5850. Ask for the MG Club block. The rate has been negotiated at $69 for Double bed, $79 for Queen bed and $94 for a larger room with King bed. All are non-smoking. The block expires June 28. A Cabella’s store is a mile down the road. Note that PdC is a resort and casino destination and rooms are scarce and more expensive on summer weekends. Accomodations at the more familiar hotel chains were either unavailable or priced at ridiculous levels. Hotel costs are generally higher this year; the Stockton hotel acknowledged they had increased their rates substantially from last year.
If you plan to join us please send me an e-mail of your intentions, including whether you will attend the reception, to danherm@jcwifi.com. I’ll then put you on my distribution list and keep you posted of information and developments regarding the tour.
We hope to see you then for some genuine MG driving enjoyment.

Caravan to UML Octagon Party
August 7-9, 2008
Ada & Grand Rapids, MI

08-08-08, Once In A Lifetime

In the last newsletter we announced the University Motors Octagon Party and in the mean time we have received the details. The party starts on Thursday August 7th with registration at the hotel. On Friday, 08-08-08 we leave the hotel at 08:00 AM for a picnic at the beach in Kirk Park. And on Saturday there will be vendors and city tours.

The host hotel is the Hilton, and many of our members also like to stay at the Exel Inn across the street.
John Twist from University Motors furthers announces:
The 2008 University Motors Octagon Party is designed to be a low-key event, reminiscent of our first summer party in 1977. Rallyes, awards plaques, a special guest, a large banquet, a featured model, a panoramic picture, individual photographs, ribbons, will have to wait for another year! Our special guests this year will be those who attended our first party in 1977!

I know that several of our club member were there in 1977 and we hope that they will join is again this year. And all of you who didn't make it 21 years ago need not to be desperate. This is going to be your only, once in a lifetime, unique, never to happen again, 08-08-08 chance. Don't miss it!

Please call University Motors at 616 682 0800 for further questions and we'll plan our caravan in next month's Driveline.

08-08-08 Caravans

We will leave for the 08-08-08 event at University Motors in two groups. (please see last Month Driveline for details about the event in general)

The first caravan will leave the Lincoln Oasis on I-94 at 12 Noon on Thursday August 7. We will spend the night in Grand Rapids and participate in the official tour to the picnic leaving 08:08:08 AM on Friday morning.

The second group will leave the Lincoln Oasis on I-94 at 8 AM on Friday and go to the picnic place on the beach of Lake Michigan directly.

We are planning to stay overnight on Friday and go by the Gilmore Car Museum (just outside of Kalamazoo, MI) on the return trip on Saturday. We may first scope out the announced parking lot activities with vendors etc. and leave late morning, spend a few hours in the museum and be back early in the evening.

Please call or e-mail Reinout Vogt at 847-342-9804 or
treasurer@chicagolandmgclub.com if you have any questions about the Thursday group or Jim Evans at 630-858-8192 and

Lucas Memorial Night Rally
August 23, 2008 - 7:00 PM
Starting and ending at:
Dapper's Restaurant
980 W. Lake Street
Addison, IL
- (click for map)
Ph: (630) 620-5600

Come one, come all. We are returning to a long standing tradition of actually running a night rally AT NIGHT (imagine that). Please arrive between 7:00 pm and 7:15 pm for registration and tech inspection. You will receive all written instructions and question sheets upon registration, so first come first serve, and there may be an advantage to arriving earlier. A BRIEF Drivers Meeting will be held at 7:30 pm sharp. First car is off directly at sunset at 7:39 pm with other cars to follow at one to three minute intervals (depending on number of entries). The rally will finish in two hours (or less) back at the starting point. All cars will have the same amount of time to finish. Natter 'n' Noggin and dinner if you like will follow at Dapper's while the crib sheets are scored for trophy presentation (guaranteed within 30 minutes of last car in).

All cars must be street legal, especially lights, brakes, horn and wipers (just in case), so make sure they work before you come. For early cars built with no turn signals the driver must pass a short test on hand signals (and hope other drivers might see your hand in the dark). All North American sale cars built after 1962 are required by law to have working seat belts, and you are required by the state of Illinois to wear them. All drivers must have a valid Driver's License (valid from state of issue). You will be required to sign (and agree to) the club liability waiver.

Good news is, the rally is FREE ENTRY for all MGs and any other British car built before 1981 or after 1980, and all non-British cars built after 1926. Any car built before 1927 is exempt from running the rally and will be awarded a trophy for one lap around the car park. MG BUCKS will be awarded to all CMGC members who enter the rally as driver or navigator (not other passengers). All entries are equally eligible for trophies (yes, even the new Minis and Miatas). All CMGC members driving or navigating in MG cars are eligible for championship points toward year end awards (subject to rules of the Driving Events Coordinator).

It is recommended (not required) to bring a clip board and flashlight to read instructions and questions. It is also recommended (not required) to bring a pencil to write answers (which will be scored). It is HIGHLY recommended for each car to have a driver AND navigator, as it is tough enough to read route instructions while driving, let alone writing. All answers to questions will be found on lighted signs along the rally route looking to the front or side (never required to look to the rear). There is no restriction against back tracking, but the clues may not be visible going back (and you may not have left bread crumbs to follow back). There will also be a substantial points deduction for being long on mileage, so it probably won't help to back track much in the time allowed.

There is no restriction against using any timing or navigational equipment (including GPS), but such use would most likely be a waste of time. Ferrets or pigs (the four legged type) are not allowed in the cars, but homing pigeons are fair game. There is no restriction against use of cell phones, but chat with other rally contestants might give away as many points as you could gain. The rallymaster will not have a cell phone, so if you get lost you're on your own. We will be cruising around low traffic streets in the western suburbs. We will NOT enter any airport or restricted government property or cross the Fox River. You will NOT be required to know anything about cities or streets in advance other than normal Rules of the Road, and any "perceived" prior knowledge may be more detrimental than helpful.

Beer, Wine and Cheese Tour
September 13-14, 2008
southern Wiscinsin

Happy spring! Kim Tonry and I drove the Missouri Endurance Rally so the 2008 driving season has started for us. It is time to your calendars for the Wine, Cheese, and Beer Tour 2008!  September 12-14, 2008. Ann and I have finalized most of the plans for the fourth annual CMGC Wine, Cheese, and Beer tour!
We will gather in Rockford on Friday, September 12th, for dinner and to spend the night.  We reserved a block of 15 rooms at the Quality Inn and Suites.  If you want to join us Friday, please reserve your rooms from the Chicagoland MG Club block.  The number at the hotel is 815 227-1300.  This year’s rate is $85.00 plus tax.  We will be dining at JMK Nippon again.  We will have a great dinner and a fresh start for the weekend.  Please let us know if you plan to join us for Friday dinner because we need to make reservations.
We will start the tour from the Rockford hotel parking lot Saturday morning.  We will drive through southwest Wisconsin on some roads we have not traveled before and arrive in Spring Green for a two hour tour of Taliesin.  We will be taking the House Tour which includes the interior and exterior of Wright’s private residence.  The cost will be $42 per person if we have 21 or more participants.  We will probably go back to the shed for Saturday dinner.
We have a block of 25 rooms at The Prairie House in Spring Green Wisconsin for the 13th of September.  This is the hotel we stayed in two years ago and they have a large parking lot for partying.  The room rate is $77.00 per night plus tax.  You can make reservations by calling the hotel at 800 588-2088.  Ask for one of the Chicagoland MG Club rooms.  The block expires August 1, so please reserve your rooms as soon as possible.
If you are attending this event, please let us know your plans and send your email address as soon as possible.  We will add you to our CMGC tour email list. We will keep you informed as plans continue to develop.
Hope you all can join us!

John Schroeder - flobearsmg@comcast.net - 630-852-1731

Please note the August 1st deadline for our group rate at the hotels.  Both hotel room blocks are reserved under the Chicagoland MG Club.  We also need to make reservations for Friday, so let me know if you will be joining us.
