As there was no direct witness to the accident, the best guess is that Dick had gone to sleep while driving. There were tracks in the gravel on the left shoulder of the road, then it looked like an over correction with black skid marks back across the road, and more skid marks down the right shoulder and onto the flat forest floor about 40 feet from the pavement. The car was traveling a bit sideways and tail first when the left front wheel hit a small tree stump, and the car rolled up on the left side and hit a tree, crushing the roof. For what it's worth, Dick was wearing his seat belt at the time, as he always did.
