The MGA With An Attitude
Brake Pipe and HOSE ROUTING, Front - BT-130
Where the front brake flex hose connects to the steel line there is a welded bracket on the MGA frame (back of the coil spring mount area). For the 1500 (drum brakes) this bracket has a large hole. For the 1600 (disc brakes) this bracket has a smaller hole and a steel clip called Locking Plate. The locking plate has a hex hole to grip the hose end fitting and prevent rotation of the hose (strain relief). The 1500 hose anchor bracket is attached high and outboard on the frame while the 1600 bracket is attached lower and more inboard. This seems to be the only physical difference between the 1500 and 1600 frames.

Another article discusses converting the 1500 car to disc brakes, including the need to cut and weld to reconfigure this hose bracket. Other people have alternate methods that seem to work, which fostered a lively discussion on a BBS, and more photos to show the finer points of the ideas.

The photo at right comes from Dominic Clancy in Switzerland. This shows a 1500 frame with 1600 brake caliper. The standard 1600 hose is routed downward from the 1500 bracket, while the 1600 type metal supply pipe has been re-routed to the top and extended to be slightly longer than original issue. Adapting the small hose end to the larger hole in the bracket looks like a large flat washer.

The photo at left comes from R J Brown in Colorado, USA. This shows a 1500 frame with MGB brake caliper, and using the original 1500 metal pipe and hose. Notice the MGB caliper does not use the banjo fitting.
