Here we have a Racimex 50056THS thermostatic bypass valve that is intended to mount on/within the oil filter mount on the engine. It can be found at www.maxrpm.de.

This arrangement puts the thermostatic bypass valve for oil cooler on the engine with a spin on oil filter. I have not yet seen installation instructions or pictures of it installed. I believe it must be used below the original hanging canister filter mount, in place of the original canister, while retaining the original adapter block. That means it would retain the original steel pipe from rear corner of the engine block to the filter adapter, and then run two hoses from this bypass valve to the oil cooler, with a spin-on filter underneath. If so, then it should work for MGA and early MGB through 1967. It may also work with the MGB inverted canister filter mount 1968-1970.

This kit has hoses with banjo fittings at the oil cooler end. To use these hoses you may need to also buy the matching oil cooler with female threads to accept the banjo bolts with copper sealing washers.

Early MGA used a one-piece hanging canister filter. This spin-on thermostatic bypass valve cannot be used with the one-piece canister filter parts. Later MGA and early MGB through 1967 used a two-piece hanging canister filter. This spin-on thermostatic bypass valve can be used with the hanging two-piece canister filter mounting base.


After 1967 MGB had the larger pre-engaged starter motor, requiring a different oil filter mount to clear the starter. 1968-1970 used an inverted canister filter. I believe this spin-on thermostatic bypass valve can be used with the inverted canister filter mounting base.

From 1971 on the MGB used either an offset hanging spin-on oil filter, or an inverted spin-on oil filter. This spin-on thermostatic bypass valve cannot be used with these spin-on adapters.
