Secrets of Jo Daviess County
- and Beyond, July 11-13, 2008
The third annual Secrets of Jo Daviess County Tour has been scheduled for the weekend of July 11-13, 2008. The MG enjoyable weekend will begin with an afternoon reception at the Lake Carroll home of the Herman’s for those who wish to travel to the area on Friday. After the reception we’ll dine at the Yellow Creek Inn with the famous fish fry so popular last year. The host hotel for that night will again be the Country Inn and Suites at Stockton.
The Saturday launch will be from the Country Inn parking lot at 10 am. Our route will take us to a short winery stop then through some new venues in Jo-Daviess County before crossing into Wisconsin. We’ll use a ferryboat to cross the Mississippi River into Iowa. We’ll work our way along the river to a famous overlook of the juncture of the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers and end the day at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Dinner, lodging and parking lot party in Prairie du Chien.
Sunday we’ll run cross-country in southwest Wisconsin. The tour breaks here and you will be free to choose your way home.
If you plan to join us please send me an e-mail of your intentions, including whether you will attend the reception, to danherm@jcwifi.com. I’ll then put you on my distribution list and keep you posted of information and developments regarding the tour.
We hope to see you then for some genuine MG driving enjoyment.

Missouri Endurance Rally
April 19-20th - Part 1
Two teams from the Chicagoland MG club met in Saint Louis to participate in the Thirteenth running of the Missouri Endurance Rally. The MER is a test of navigational skills as well as the mettle of cars and drivers. The father/son team of Mark and Mark Michalak join Kim Tonry and me for a fun adventure traveling the roads of Missouri. Robert Rushing, rallymaster, always includes stops all around the state. The two Marks were driving a red MGA coupe this year, Kim and I were in my green MGB. We had twelve stops to make in the twenty-four hours allotted for the rally.
Kim and I left early Friday morning and decided to drive a portion of the old Illinois section of Route 66. We picked up the old road at I-55 and Joliet road north of Joliet. We drove through Joliet and stopped at some of the remaining landmarks along the route. We did photo stops at the Rocketman café in Manhattan with its giant man statue. We passed the Dixie Cup in Braidwood and stopped at a restored gas station in Odell. Alas, the old Pig Hip restaurant burned to the ground in March of 2007. All that is left is a bronze plaque to commemorate its existence. We stopped at the octagonal public library (now a museum) in Atlanta, Illinois. The years have not been great to old Route 66, but if you look you can still find a lot of the old Mother Road. Over the five years I have been driving MER, I have enjoyed driving sections of the original

The details about the only, once-in-a-lifetime, unique, never to happen again, 08-08-08 party are available and we can send you the registration form. Call or e-mail Reinout Vogt at 847 342 9804 or reinoutvogt@gmail.com
We'll leave on Thursday morning from the Lincoln Oasis on I-294/I-80 for Grand Rapids, MI. The actual party is of course on Friday the 8th, with a picnic lunch in Kirk Park on the shore of Lake Michigan between Holland and Grand Haven. We're looking for a grill master to make the burgers and hot dogs (we can bring the grill) or we do a 'bring a dish/beverage to share' picnic.
And there will probably be another of the famous parking lot parties on Friday evening back at the hotel. The official hotel is the Hilton, but many of our members prefer to stay at the Exel, just across the street.
Saturday has vendors and special city tours scheduled for those that want stay another day.
Please contact University Motors at 616 682 0800 for details or call Reinout at 847 342 9804.
