Getting the wheel bearing nut loose requires a little work.
We had 17 cars in all. 11 MGBs, 4 Midgets, 1 MGA, and, dare I say it, 1 TR6. No T-Series came out this year. Besides the usual oil changes and such, several cars got wheel alignments and another MG had a planned front sway bar replacement. The ‘repair of the day’ was an unplanned rear wheel bearing nut adjustment.
While Cowboy was conducting an under-carriage inspection tour on one of the cars on a lift, it was noted that there was excessive play (wobble) on the right rear wheel. Removing the wheel revealed that the bearing nut had not been torqued correctly. In fact it was just put on finger tight. Then we all got a lesson on what a pain in the…..axle…..it can be to remove the cotter key from the castellated nut while it’s inside the hub extension. The nut was then properly torqued and the car was good to go. After the wheel was refitted of course.
Then it was off to Rock Bottom Brewery where we met up with several other CMGC members who hadn’t been able to make it to the tune-up. Some adult refreshments and food, and more conversation rounded out the afternoon.
