Chicagoland MG Club: Driveline June 2019

MGA Guru Gone Mobile...

Beginning of May we headed out of California into Oregon, primarily to continue shop hopping. Will post the gritty statistics first. I count only 8 cars fixed or tinkered this month, 10 friends visited along the way, and just 1 club meeting. But the real story is 72 shops visited this month (and not quite finished yet). Northern California 5, Oregon 23, Washington 12, Montana 2, Idaho 4, Utah 25, Colorado 1, who knew people in Utah might like vintage British cars? 3800 miles in 4 weeks this time. More Colorado to come.

Mini Delivery and racing bug-eye at Titan Auto Repair
Heading out of northern California we found Martin Hveem Classic Car Restorations in Redding. They do high-end restorations on classic cars. The guy's wife was telling me they don't do the vintage British stuff anymore, but the man himself says don't listen to the wife as he still likes them and still works on them whenever he can get his hands on them. Kevin Kay Restorations, also in Redding is another large resto shop dealing in high-end stuff, backed up about a year, but they still do vintage British cars (for the right price).

Getting into Oregon we were putting on some miles as the targets were more spread out. We found ACR Automotive Import Specialists in Florence, OR. Turns out we had been there before, just didn't have it properly recorded. We were looking for Classic Auto LEDs in Albany, OR, but they sold out a few years ago, and we have already visited the "new" Classic Auto LEDs in Isanti, MN. A bit farther out of our way we visited Robert Wilson at Healey Lane Restoration in Springfield, OR. He restores primarily big Healeys (by the fistful), occasionally an AH bugeye Sprite. We found Mini Motors Classic Coachworks in Salem, OR was winding down for retirement, but there was also a new shop Titan Auto Repair in the same building. The young owner there services most cars but is very much into vintage British cars. I managed to pick up a replacement fuel gauge here.

We spent some time looking forBritish Parts Northwest in

Nice shiny bits from BWR Motorsport LLC. How fast do you want to go?
Dayton, OR before we figured out, we had driven past it twice without notice. There is no sign there because it is exclusively mail-order parts business, but we were welcomed in for a nice tour. We found BWR Motorsport LLC in Beaverton, OR, looks like a house with a substantial workshop in back. They build and supply parts for race engines, primarily BMC A-series (Sprite, Midget, Mini). On May 7 we touched 11 shops in the Portland area, engine builders, machine shops, service and restoration shops. There was one "Roop's MG" 200 miles east of Portland in Pendleton, OR. We made the call to find this shop is winding down operations for retirement, not taking any more service orders, so we skipped that side trip. Spent the tail end of the day getting new tires for the trailer

A hybrid MGA propshaft that cannot work
(for about the 10th time in 5 years).

Heading into Washington we found Commonwealth Classics Ltd in Vancouver, possibly the only LBC shop in Vancouver, which could be important for folks who don't want to cross the busy bridge. By end of day we were visiting Foreign Parts Positively (FPP) in Brush Prairie, WA (a bit of a challenge downhill through the woods). Keith Ansel is celebrating 50 years in the business, avid supporters of the local car clubs, and sometimes host club tech sessions. We dropped into Griots Garage in Tacoma, WA, big on paints and polish, tools and accessories, with a few nice cars and a large collection of motorcycles on display. One surprise was our visit to Olson's Gaskets in Port Orchard, WA. They supply gaskets for just about everything old when you can't find it anywhere else. There are warehouses full of gaskets, and if they don't have what you need, they can probably make it. Still in Washington we stopped
