Monthly Column of Driving Events

Well, Well, Well……..
Do you think July has been HOT, WET   HUMID ENOUGH???
So many INCREDIBLE events have happened, regardless of the weather conditions!!!
Keep with me…..this is another LONG column!!!!! There is SO MUCH “FUN” to recap and tell you about!!!!!!!!

Back on June 23rd, the Lands’ End Rally, hosted and organized by Dean & Kerry Hickenlooper was a GREAT time!! There were a total of 12 cars that rallied through this exciting ride with challenges to part take in for the eminent MG Shot glass prizes!! Congratulations to Bill Kalafut & Jean Heasley – 1st place, Tim & Jamie Schafer, 2nd place and Bob Lee, 3rd place. Fortunately, there were no MG breakdowns or issues on this driving tour!!

To say that The GOF Central 2018, held in Lake Delavan Wisconsin was a success and an extraordinary event is a MAJOR UNDERSTATEMENT!! The astonishing accomplishment that went into organizing and running this event was exceptional! Thank you, Ray Costa and all the Vintage club members and Chicagoland MG Members who helped, bring together this unforgettable and memorable event!

The Driving tours, rallies, Funkhana, valve cover races, BBQ, Luncheon, Banquet Dinner, silent and live auctions, tech sessions, meeting the notorious John Twist, and seeing all the GEORGOUS MGs on display were the HIGHLIGHT of this amazing 4 day event! Everyone had a phenomenal time!!!!!

I am proud to acknowledge the 8 winners of both the VMGCC and the CMGC club that won awards for the remarkable 120 cars that participated in the Car show, all displayed along the lakefront on Lake Delavan. CONGRATUALTIONS TO ALL:
Excellence Award MBG Chrome Bumper – Phil and Sandy Wydra
1st Place MGB Rubber Bumper- Tim & Jamie Schafer
1st place Triple M (MMM) Premier– Reinout and Henneke Vogt
1st Place – TC - Tom Moore – Vintage club
Special award – Ray Navarro (sportsmanship) Vintage Club
Non MG 1961 - Ray Costa Vintage Club
1st place 1955 Model TF – Robert Weinstein
Excellence award – 1953 Model TD – Brian Dubin – Vintage Club

I regret to mention that there was a mishap on the way home from the GOF for Tim Schafer. This time, he had carburetor issue. Once again, along the side of the road in a small town right outside of Lake Delavan on an extremely HOT and humid daySteve Sparks, and Dean Hickenlooper helped Tim get the “challenged” MG Midget up and running again.

During the monthly CMGC meeting Melissa Gonzales and her mother, Diana Gonzales, had given an incredible review of the NAMGBR (2018MG) held in Gettysburg, PA. This is a HUGE event (for MGB type cars). MGB cars travel coast to

coast to take part in this Amazing event. I highly recommend to look into 2019’s NAMGAR event which will be located in Traverse City, MI. Information can be found on the NAMGAR website.

The Mid-Summer MG Party was another WONDERFUL event! Scott Fohrman graciously opened his “HISTORICAL” GRAND home for a quaint lunch and social gathering. 9 VMGCC   CMGC members attended while cooking out, having a few drinks on various stunning decks and admiring the beautiful view of Lake Michigan. Thank you for the tour of your lovely home, your impressive garage, workshop and history of the house!

Jim Compton had some competition this time on The 2nd Miata Auto Cross. There were 6 MG cars participating. The winners are as follows: 1st Place – Dean Hickenlooper, 2nd Place – Tim Schafer and 3rd Place – Jim Compton.

There was a little hiccup – guess who?? YEP!! Tim Schafer. His door lock was jammed, which prevented him from being able to open up the driver’s side door. (Not to worry – it’s a convertible – he was not locked out!!! He just had to keep hurdling over the door to get in and out)!!! HA!!!!! Poor guy also had fuel pump issues…..other than that – it was a fun LONG, misty, hot day out for the guys!!!

I am seriously considering to add a separate column called “Tim’s Corner”. This would entail all Tim Schafer’s unfortunate mishaps, since his record now stands to at least one breakdown or problem per event…..

The last event for the month of July to talk about was the Golf Course Tour and 19th Hole Picnic/Cookout. For its 1st “inaugural” event, Doug Clark did an OUTSTANDING job designing a delightful and fun fact driving tour of historical golf courses in the South Cook and DuPage county areas. The roads were beautiful and winding as 14 MG cars, both from the VMGCC and CMGC caravanned alongside of these landmark private and public courses. Following the drive, Thank you Jerry Cihak for welcoming everyone back to your lovely home for a cookout/lunch. Doug, our MG GOLF ENTHUSIAST challenged everyone with his golf quiz, which disappointedly, did not meet his high expectation of results. Sorry Doug, but GREAT quiz which now leaves us MG CAR enthusiasts with more golf knowledge to put in our back pockets!!!! This was an EXTREMELY successful 1st time event and hope it will return next year!!!

The 42/52 Anniversary Tour organized by Robert Weinstein and Chris Edmonds MAY or MAY NOT be taking place on Sunday July 29th, due to low attendance response. I will have to recap on what happened in next month’s issue. Hopefully, the event did take place!!

The 3rd Miata Autocross III took place on August 4th at Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg. I will recap on this next month as well.

Kerry Hickenlooper is hosting the annual event which was held on August 5th. This is an event by invitation only. I’m sure Kerry will give a remarkable review
