Chicagoland MG Club: Driveline August 2019

(Continued from page 18)

Safety Fast Restoration LLC in Mansfield, where they work on all MGs, and seem to like the older models, currently having a 1936 MG TA Airline Coupe in process, and a rather rare 1935-36 Riley Sprite.

SU carbs at Paltech
Upstairs/Downstairs British Automotive in Mansfield, OH, had moved twice, not called Pierre's Garage in Shiloh, OH. Pierre is certified to work on new electronic cars, but still works on the vintage British cars as well. Specialty Parts & Service in Medina, OH is long gone, morphed into Medina Motorsports, from whom I bought my steel fan shroud in 1997, but closed permanently in 2018. Paltech Technologies LL, having a patented "Micro Polishing Process", is dedicated to rebuilding carburetors, SU, Z-S, and occasionally a Weber or two. He has outgrown the home garage in Brunswick, OH and now has a larger shop in Medina, OH, very busy. The M.G. Centre in Tallmadge, OH no longer exists (long time gone). We made a short stop at Summit Racing in Tallmadge, OH, several of these stores across the nation, favorite haunt of the lead-footed racer types.

MGs and TRs at Classic Restoration, Warren, OH

MGA wood dash with proper counterbores and brackets
Wednesday (7/24) we got a two-fer, looking for Antique Auto Battery in Youngstown, OH, the business has been transferred to one of the prior employees, and is now renamed Jim's Battery Manufacturing. Still the same great products, concours correct batteries for your vintage cars. a longer run brought us to Classic Restoration in Warren, OH. They work mostly on Triumph, but occasionally other vintage British cars, full restoration services available. Then we visited Whitworth Shop in Novelty, OH. They cater primarily to T-type and earlier MG cars, doing lots of woodwork and some sheet metal.

We dropped in to visit John Wolf & Co. Inc in Willoughby, OH where they repair and restore gauges and instruments for antique autos. While there we found two more businesses at the same address, in the same building unit. There was Capaldi Enterprises Inc and KenDoIt Rods + Restos, both of those business doing high end restoration work (bring a fat checkbook). Omni Specialties in Cleveland, OH had reportedly moved to Lorain County in 2011, but is by now out of business. We had a business card leading us to Bob's British Cars in North Royalton, OH. Mostly TR serviced here, but there was a nice TD there as well. The business card says, "House calls available".

Spiffy new MGA Coupe in Miamisburg, OH

Then we had a long haul 3-1/2-hour drive southwest to make a dinner meeting with MG Car Club Southwestern Ohio Centre in Miamisburg, OH. A MGA Coupe parked out front was so new that the restoration was not finished in time for NAMGAR GT-44 in Dubuque, Iowa just two weeks earlier. Inside we found 30 jolly souls all happy to see us (finally) show up, and a good time was had by all.

Now we have something to celebrate, having just finished the tour of 1,100 shops around North America supplying parts and services for vintage British cars. It will require some time to finish posting photos and notes and cleaning up the Shops list and cross reference links. Meanwhile you may continue to follow our follies at: http://MGAguru.com/mobile
