CMGC/VMGCC 42/52 Anniversary Tour

by Ray Costa

For the third consecutive year the CMGC and the VMGCC celebrated their anniversaries together with a tour from through the north shore suburbs to the Burnham Park Yacht Club for lunch. On July 29th, the tour started in downtown Winnetka where there was a car show focusing on European cars and motorcycles. There were some truly delectable machines on display, everything from a custom bodied Delahaye coupe to an HRG. Several vintage MGs (at this point they are all vintage, aren’t they?) were on display including an Arnolt MG convertible. Several handfuls of Jaguars were littered around the area, most being E-types of one vintage or another. One lone TR-6 had a licensed plate reading “No EFN MG.” The reverse sentiment would not fit on a license plate. There were more Sunbeam-Talbots and TVRs than Triumphs (four each).

The show ran from 9:00 until 11:00 AM, and we had our driver’s meeting while the cars were leaving. A dozen MGs signed on for the tour. One couple came for the show but could not go on the tour. There was also an MG wannabe that accompa-nied us on the tour. With a Ford V6 engine and a fiberglass body, an MG it was not, even though the license plate proudly pro-claimed that it was. It finished the tour, showing an affinity to its namesake by having electrical problems with its taillights.

Sheridan Avenue winds it’s way from the Wisconsin border well into Chicago. We drove the portion from Winnetka to the beginning of Lake Shore Drive, then drove alongside the lake to the museum campus. The Burnham Harbor Yacht Club is located right next to where Meigs Field used to be. It has been in the same location for decades. The same cannot be said about Meigs Field. Thirteen MGs, the wannabe and a 1965 Lincoln Continental lined up on the grass next to the water while the drivers and passengers ate lunch looking across the water to where a flying saucer had landed on top of what was Soldier’s Field. The baby blue Lincoln was amazing. All original, it was three times the size of any of the MGs. It was also three times as heavy. Tim and Jamie’s MG Midget could have fallen asleep on the back seat, and any of the other MGs would have fit comfortably in its trunk. We all had a good look and left it there.

After a great lunch, we all headed home. My wife decided she wanted to go back up Sheridan Road. We followed it north to Lake Bluff before taking a short cut home. None of the cars had any issues on the trip to the yacht club. I hope no one had prob-lems getting home.
