Triad Fall Car Care Safety Clinic for Seniors
October 12, 2019 — 8 a.m. to 12 noon
Once again, members of the Chicagoland MG Club performed the most pivotal role at the
Naperville & Lisle Townships Triad Car Care Safety Clinic for Seniors on October 12th. The twice annual safety clinic inspect s
roughly 40 check-list items on vehicles driven by seniors age 50 and over. The Fall event drew 60 cars, and
roughly half of the attendees were there for the first time.
The Car Care Safety event has several components, such as a waiting area offering coffee, tea, and other beverages, donuts, fruit, treats, and more. The area also has important information tables staffed by county and local law enforcement units. Services available for senior safety and scam prevention is stressed (seniors are vulnerable targets for scams, including unscrupulous mechanics who solicit often unnecessary automobile repairs). Outside, vintage and antique automobiles are available for guests to sit in and have their pictures taken. While waiting, guests may also take a ride in a Ford Model T.
The single most important event component is, however, the actual vehicle inspections. This is
where the MG club members and other “Car People” inspect vehicles to ensure that they are safe to drive
for the upcoming months.
Nine fantastic MG Club members worked the event, both in the bays of a highway department garage just a few feet away from the comfortable waiting area, and outside going over the results of the inspection with each vehicle’s owner. The MG team was: Doug Clark, Jim Compton, Bob Dorsey, Barney Gaylord, Dean Hickenlooper, Bill Kalafut, Chuck McCallum, Phil Wydra, and yours truly.
