There is still time to sign up for the Chicagoland MG Club's camping trip to Road America. We have a group site reserved for July 23 to 25 at Plymouth Rock Camping Resort, which is just down the road from Gate 2. The group site will accommodate 32 adults, and we currently have space left for 12. The campground has all the amenities, including restrooms with hot and cold running water, showers, two swimming pools, camp store, etc. It is about an hour north of Milwaukee, so most of us are able to get there Friday evening in time to go as a group to Elkhart Lake or Plymouth for supper. The evening concludes with most of us sitting around a big campfire and also giving advice to those setting up their tents after dark. Saturday morning we awaken to the aroma of the big pot of coffee that Bill Cooper makes. At 8 am, the sound of race cars starting practice reminds us that it is time to get to the track. Bring sunscreen and hiking boots. Road America is located in the rolling hills of the Northern Kettle Moraine area, and there are many good vantage points for watching the action and cheering on Chicagoland members who are racing. At just over 4 miles, it is the longest road course on this continent. The track record (average speed for one lap) is 142 mph. Although you may not see speeds quite that high on the weekend of the Merrill Lynch / Brian Redman International Challenge, you will see truly exotic cars- on the track, in the paddock, and even in the parking lot. More correctly, you will see and hear them, because when the CanAm race starts, you can hear it on the opposite side of the track. Cars may also be viewed during concours held on the streets of Elkhart Lake Friday and Saturday evenings. Prior to the Saturday evening concours, we return to the campground to cook supper. Only those registered at the campground can attend, because access to the campground is restricted on race weekends. Highlights of the meal are dishes brought for passing-these usually include MGBeans and MGBean Salad. The rest of Saturday evening includes walking around "downtown" Elkhart Lake to view the concours and landmarks like Siebkins Hotel. And, of course, another campfire. On Sunday, many of the Chicagoland members can be found viewing the races from the bleachers between turns 7 and 8.
If you would like to take part in the camping, contact Jake & Ann at 847-295-2753 as soon as possible. Everyone who has reserved will be contacted for confirmation by July 7. Road America ticket brochures will be available at the June meeting. A 3 day Super Ticket is $55 and must be ordered by July 14. Single day admissions for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are, respectively, $15, $25, and $30. The Ticket Hotline is 1-800-365-RACE (Fax 1-920-892-4550). Check www.roadamerica.com for more information or to view the thumbnail video of a lap around the track. For more information on the campground, phone 1-920-892-4252.
