Subject: Canada/USA Tour
Just got back from Niagara Falls, NY, where I met up with the group from the CAAR GB touring & rally club on their Canada/USA Eastern Tour. Our own Barney Gaylord also made the trip (much longer for him than for me) and will be spending a day or two with the Tourers, and I'm sure he'll be posting a report, so I'll leave that to him.
It was great to finally meet Barney, BTW, after reading his posts/adventures/advice for over a year, and to finally see what the MGA With an Attitude looks like in person (it has attitude, and personality, from the "Hi" written in the dust on the side, to the smashed bugs on the windshield -awesome- a car that is driven the way they were meant to be).
Anyway, if any of you happen to live near one of the group's stops, it would be worth the time to go out and see the cars and welcome our British friends. The cars (we just don't see many Bentley's around here) and the people (one offered to let my friend take his Triumph Stag around the block a few times!) are just delightful. I only wish I could have joined in the trip with them but, alas, my boring, mundane schedule would not permit it.

Read Nory's post on your visit. Very commendable! Sometimes it difficult to get folks to drive around the block, let alone travel 500 miles to get together with some folks!

My MGA and I just took a short trip from Naperville, Illinois, to New York state for a visit with the CANADA/USA '98 rally group at Niagara Falls and the surrounding area. This little trip of mine was 590 miles east bound in 10 hours, 1405 miles total, not particularly excessive, as many of you on the british-cars and mgs lists already know about a few of my travels.
While in New York state, I took pictures of all of the rally cars and some other interesting "ancient" vehicles that were also there for a visit with the group. I have posted these pictures with a few comments on my web site. You can view these at this address:

I have also placed a link to the CAAR-GB web site there. These pictures will remain on line at this site at least for the duration of the rally, possibly a little longer. (And yes, Ric and Nory, you're both there.)
On my outbound trip through Ontario from Windsor To Niagara Falls I ran about 280 miles mostly on side roads, largely within 10 miles of the Lake Erie shore line, and only about 20 miles on CAN-3. I went through about 30 little towns along the way and still made that distance in 5 hours. Nice roads, all hard-top this time, mostly farming territory, very little traffic, and no cops in the rural areas. Woo-hoo!
On the return trip I ran the first 140 miles on back roads through western New York state from Canandaigua to Jamestown. Again mostly hard-top roads, but this time winding through the hills amidst lots of greenery and occasional small lakes. I understand that some folks call these mountains, but hey, if we makes it mostly in top cog they's jest hills. Lots of neat little towns along here too, but nothing to get stuck in for more than a few minutes. My total run on Friday was 790 miles, including 120 miles eastbound in the morning with the tour group. I had a nice lunch with the group in New York and still managed to get home before midnight.

You certainly had a great trip visiting the group from GB. I have attached a few shots I took while they spent 5 days in Halifax picking up their cars and getting organized which hopefully you can use on your web site.
There are two of the XK120 Jaguar DHC belonging to Jan and Leny Velthuizen from Belguin. The car was purchased sight unseen in Georgia and these are pictures taken the first time they put eyes on it in Halifax when picking it up. Unfortunately it only made it as far as Moncton, New Brunswick before a valve stuck open and it is now back in Halifax being repaired by the best Jaguar mechanic in town.
There are two of Geoffrey Moore's 1932 Essex Terraplane Special as he was working on the fuel pump in front of the hotel in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia in the afternoon after picking it up at the Autoport here.
The last are of the cars as the owners were picking them up at the Autoport and awaiting Customs clearance, the 1938 Buick of the Van Hoorn's and the 1927 Morris Oxford owned by John & Marilyn Rushworth.
Thanks for the trip report and it looks like you enjoyed meeting them. You are a real goodwill ambassador.

Thank you for your e-mail and pictures. It is good to hear and see that the run is going well. I spoke to Nigel on Sunday and he reports that all is going to plan with no problems. The Jaguar XK120 is being repaired in Halifax and will be shipped back to Belgium from there. I hope to speak with Nigel again soon, I will keep you informed.

Please can you leave it online for a bit longer if possible? I am directing a lot of people to it that have emailed me over the last month and wanted to know something of the trip. I will have a closer look at everything and let you know if anything needs amending. Did you get any other photos of my car? the Jag XJ6, I am collecting every photo I can find. The Edsel by the way was a '59 according to my shipping records.

Looks like '60 model to me, and some others on the net have been verifying that as well. I think production stopped before the end of the 1959 calendar year, so all the '60 models were actually produced at the end of '59.

Like I said, all in good fun. And it was a whole lot easier and cheaper than a trip to England.

Thank for letting us take the pages over. I will work them into a newly revamped site soon, awaiting lots of new stuff to upgrade at the moment and will wait till this is working just right.
I will speak to Dave Angel about the year of his Edsel when I see him at Southampton next month and get a definitive answer to the year of his car. Like I said the shipping doc's had '59 on them, but I am sure he said it was a '61 when I went with him to pick it up from the UK import docks the other year.

Just a note to let you know that we 'made it' to Florida and have now returned to England and are awaiting shipping of our cars. We had a brilliant trip, unfortunately we were driving in cloud in the Blue Ridge Mountains but otherwise the scenery was spectacular.

Sure. Niagra or Alaska? Most of the details of the Alaska trip are on the web site. Otherwise, 19,0000 miles in 8 weeks.
For the trip to New York to meet your rally group, I left Napervile, Illinois at 3:30am on Wednesday 9/30/98. Five hours later I was crossing the bridge at Detroit/Windsor, 312 miles, mostly expressway. Then I took all side roads through Ontario to arrive at Niagra Falls in another five hours, another 280 miles. Nice trip out, and arrived in plenty of time for dinner.
Friday, after rallying out to Canandiagua, NY, I took more back roads through the hills of western New York for 140 miles to the southwest until Jamestown, where I caught the expressway and made a b-line for home. 600 miles on Wednesday, 800 miles on Friday, home before midnight, just as planned.
I'm getting better at web site work. One hour for the photo finishing, and about three hours to scan the images and get it all online.
Glad to hear that your rally was such a success. I'll keep an eye out for the next one.
