BOOT LID and BONNET QUICK CHANGE -- BD-118

Occasionally I hear of someone wanting to switch periodically from luggage rack for traveling to no luggage rack for a car show. An easy way to do that is to have two boot lids, with and without the luggage rack, and switch the panel when needed. I don't do that myself, but I do R&R the bonnet periodically for maintenance. For this application I use quick change thumb screws. This allows me to remove the bonnet in two minutes and reinstall it in five minutes.

These are cheap and easy parts assembled from a standard socket head cap screw, #10-32UNF x 5/8" long, and a plastic knurled knob 5/8-inch diameter. I bought a box of these plastic bits for $4 about 30 years ago, and I haven't used them all yet. Assembly is simple, just squeeze the screw and cap together with a vice, or tap the screw into place with a hammer (like driving a nail).

Today the price is $8.55 for a box of 50.

Or for a little more money, a thumb screw with hex socket drive to tighten with an allen wrench after installation.
$8.29 per pack of 10 (with stainless steel screw).
