Here is a picture of the original style rear seal for the MGA mid 1500 type gearbox, also common to the MG ZB Magnette unit with internal rear seal. Like the earlier external seal, this one also had felt and wide leather seal early on, later changed to felt and wide rubber seal (as shown in this picture).


A narrow rubber only modern style rotating shaft seal doesn't cut it for this sliding shaft application. It needs the wide leather or rubber seal to mechanically tolerate the sliding motion. It also needs the felt outer dust seal to keep the shaft clean when it slides through the inner oil seal.
