MGA Superamerica

Superamerica

Photo supplied by Frank Cornell, taken in the paddock at Thompson Raceway, Connecticut, USA in the early 1960s. I have been told that this special bodied MGA Coupe looks something like a Ferrari Superamerica, but so far not to me. Ferrari made lots of different models named Superamerica, at least as early as 1957 and as recent as 2006. This MGA Coupe custom doesn't look much like any Ferrari Superamerica that I can find. For now I would call it one-off custom MGA Coupe with unknown pedigree. Any additional information would be appreciated. And for what my opinion might be worth, I believe this is a different car from the one shown below.

On 3/4/2014, Christopher J. Beckwith in Middletown, CT, USA sent this note and photos:
"I think my dad has the MGA "Superamerica". A few years ago my dad found an old MGA that was had been sitting at a garage since the early 70's I believe. We are trying to find more information on his car even if it isn't".

Due to lots of significant differences in configuration, I will guess this is a different car. I cannot imagine one being reconfigured so much as to look like the other.

And now, back to the beginning.

"The white car pictured, I had a hand in the building of that car. It was our auto shop project in the years 1967-69 at Yonkers High School. It originally had a 327 Fuel Injected Corvette engine.

The sunroof came out of an early 60's VW Beetle as did the headlight assemblies. The Shelby Cobra as you might guess was the inspiration of the grille area and the roof line was inspired by the Mustang Fastbacks. The window slate idea was taken from the Mustang of 1969, they were hand made. We had also put a hand made replica of the inverted rear wing from a Mustang as well. It also had a chin spoiler on it. The side pipes were installed by the class. When finished it had wire wheels with knock offs.

The car was used in a couple of adds with some very sexy models laying across the hood. It was also in the NY Coliseum custom car show and some other shows as well. I hope the car is still around. I remember that car as it was a big part of my life at the time. I see in their update that they stripped what they call the hideous rear body work. Makes me sick to see that. They have no idea the amount of work or pride that went into that car. Nor the numerous awards it had earned". -- Greg

Superamerica "Then I Found this. Oh well, I'm not changing it".

The picture on the right is from the original resurrection and modification from a wrecked car in the early 60's. I guess Chris was referring to the VW headlights (which he still has), which were also a 2nd generation modification by the late 1960's high school kids. If he had known that before finishing the car, he may have removed those as well to change back to the earlier standard MGA headlights.
