10/15/01 MEETING REPORT
Tonight’s meeting began at 8:04 pm and ended at 8:42 pm. There were 71 members present for our 25th anniversary party and one guest from Wisconsin - Jim Carnahan who owns a 79 Midget. Also, Mr. Bruce Lorvy, owner of a 68 MGB. A special thanks to all members for making this a memorable evening.
OLD BUSINESS
Elkhart Lake Fall Festival - This was a VSCDA sponsored weekend featuring MGs. There were over 60 cars registered with 27 starters in the MG only race. Both Friday and Saturday had beautiful weather but unfortunately it poured rain on Sunday. Kim Tonry has many photographs and will be writing an article on what will hopefully become an annual event.
MGA Research Autocross - Maynard Hirsch and Barney Gaylord put on a great autocross held
at the MGA Research Facilities in Burlington, Wisconsin. This facility was used as the AMC proving ground and is now used to test vehicle safety measures. We had use of the 12 acre skid pad area that Barney fully utilized to set up a speedy course in which the average lap time was just under 2 minutes.
Several cars from the Milwaukee club joined us on Sunday. The weather was beautiful for the 25 drivers of cars that included a MR2, an Alpha Romeo and a Ford Taurus. Afterwards, while everyone was stopped for eats and critiques, it began to hail. Wonderful luck. Maynard also tells us that he is already working on this for next year.
Tech Sessions - Steve Merical reported that we have had no tech sessions since the last meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
Halloween Rally - Paul Urquhart explained that this rally is going to be quite different from the normal rally event. Time will be the most important factor with mileage counting for nothing and there will be an important “poker run” piece where donning a costume will get you one extra card of the 9 total. There are only 6 questions that need to be answered but having a navigator is essential. The course will be about 50 miles and last approximately 2.5 hours with a planned bail out point near Duke O’Brians restaurant/finish line.
Paul MUST know by October 26th if you are planning to attend so that he may make certain the appropriate number of playing cards are available. Contact him by phone or e-mail with the names of the driver and navigator plus what type of car will be driven. This is the last points rally of the season.
Fall Tune Down Party - This year’s tune down will be at Al Piemonte Ford on Sunday, November 11. We will have use of the lifts. See the web site for directions.
Christmas Party - The party will again be at Patsby’s Restaurant where we will be served a family style dinner. There will be entertainment and everything will take place on Saturday, December 1, 2001. The cost of the dinner is not yet firm but will probably be around $20.00 due by November 19th (next meeting) along with the forms. See the web-site for details and there will be extra forms at the next meeting if you need to sign up there.
Cruise to the Rock - Don Anderson explained that club members will be participating in the annual Thanksgiving Day cruise to the rock to commemorate the first automobile race in the US. The rock is located behind the Museum of Science and Industry and is usually the site of Motor Sport Unlimited television crew broadcast. They have been broadcasting from this spot for the last several years and frequently invite car and motorcycle clubs to participate. Afterwards the CMGC members gather for breakfast in a Bridgeport restaurant called Stages.
Election Time - It’s election time once again. We are taking nominations for the officers positions beginning today. Please speak with your nominee first before sending the information to Bill Hedrick or Barney Gaylord who have agreed to act as nomination committee and oversee election ballots. Nominations will be taken until the November meeting on the 19th. The elections will be held in December.
Steve Selan nominated Mike Hirsch for the position of Secretary, Mike accepted the nomination. This was seconded by Bill Hedrick. All officers, except Secretary, will run again for the office they now occupy.
Regalia - Larry needs one more name before he can place an order for the name tags. The silver anniversary cars are going fast so if you’re thinking of ordering one - do it soon. We have new stadium blankets in dark green for sale. Barney has a picture on the web-site. These are very nice blankets.
Misc - A correction to last months minutes - the Carb Cleaner and LEAD for the raffle were donated by Oscar Gonzales not Dave Bralich. Sorry Oscar.
The rosters are printed. My apologies to everyone that returned their forms and does not see updated information in the pamphlet. There were a good many pieces of mail that I did not received until after we had gone to press. All updated information has been added to the club membership rolls. Anyone that did not receive a roster at the meeting tonight will be getting one in the mail soon.
Larry Daniels gave the archive a brick from the Abingdon England works with a certification that was donated to our club by Bob Simon.
Steve and Janiss Selan donated a copy of “The MG Car Club - The First 70 Years”. This is number 397 of 700 copies of the text. Our club has a write up on page 116 that was written and submitted by Steve. The book is in the archives and can be seen by anyone who wants to read it by contacting Bill or Deb Mennell.
There were anniversary dash plaques handed out to all members attending tonights celebration. We also has several items donated towards the raffle - 2 Roadster Factory posters, a 25th anniversary fender cover and Barney Gaylord donated a very nice car blanket. There were several bottles of water handed out to our “classic members”, those people that joined the club within the first 5 years, donated by Gene Cooper from the MG 2001 July gathering.
Respectufully submitted, Debra Mennell
