ARLINGTON HEIGHTS - William J. Cole, 87, passed away unexpectedly Jan. 16 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, after a long and happy life. He was surrounded by family and much love. Bill grew up in Chicago's Portage Park and was a Korean War-era Army veteran. He graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology and was an engineer with Motorola for 20 years, pioneering mobile communications. He also was director of engineering for Cobra phone and CB products in Chicago. Bill was a parishioner at Our Lady of the Wayside church in Arlington Heights since 1962. In his retirement years, he volunteered with Habitat For Humanity building homes for the less fortunate, and subsequently helped as an overnight supervisor at Public Action to Deliver Shelter at Wayside. Most recently, he assisted the homeless at Journeys - The Road Home in Palatine. Bill was full of life, energy and talent. He raised four children with wife Adelaide (Scotty). They liked to travel cross-country in a motor home, heading to the Southwest and Mexico. Bill loved shooting and hunting, and fabricated his own muzzle-loading rifles. He also had a passion for vintage British automobiles, owning a 1952 MG-TD and a 1980 MGB. He and Scotty were part of the Vintage MG Car Club of Chicago, and they liked to drive in car club outings and local parades. Bill loved his family dearly and with much appreciation for the time he spent with Scotty, children, 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral was held at Our Lady of the Wayside, 434 W. Park St., Arlington Heights, on Monday, Jan. 28 followed by a funeral Mass at Noon.
