Well hopefully by the time you read this spring will have finally arrived here in Chicago. This might will be the first time I had to brush Snow off my MGB cover to attend a Rally. Welcome to Spring Time in Chicagoland. One day I’m cutting the lawn and the next I’m shoveling snow. Enough about the weather.
We had a Great tech session on welding over at Pat Guest’s place. His wife Bonnie’s MGB (Maggie I believe) is having a major restoration undertaking. Replacing floors, rockers, castle rail etc. I’ll let Pat tell the rest of the story hopefully in his article. The Traveling Mechanics are on the move this year.
On another note we’ve started an engine rebuild for our former President Ray Hansen with a motor donated to the project by Steve Skeggs. It came out of his shed in back of the shop. There seemed to be a few. He mentioned they might be breeding back there! We got the engine cleaned up and broke down then dropped it off at the machine shop for milling on the block and a valve job on the cylinder head. .020” over on the cylinders and new valves and guides for the head. Got the bits back from the shop and drilled out and tapped the oil journal plugs. Next will be having Ray over to assemble. Oh I forgot to mention while I was at Steve’s he managed to scare up a crankshaft which had already been cut .010 under and donated to the project after he said he wasn’t sure where it came from. I wonder what’s really going on in that shed behind his shop??
As for my Mustard 79 MGB the painting has been moving slowly, on to my other project to attend and work on. Hopefully soon I’ll find some time and get some color back on her. Although the Doors and Boot are painted, and I’ve stripped the Aluminum Bonnet only to find a pair of small cracks in the Bonnet frame by the hinges. Unfortunately, the frame is also Aluminum soooooo......... not having a TIG welder I had to send it out for repair.
A quick note on Bill Kalafut’s MG YB --we’ll be starting welding soon so anyone who’s interested in learning and or helping come on by.
That’s it for now. Keep’em on the road! SAFTY FAST
~~ Dean Hickenlooper
your humble servant

Anticipation
April is almost over and my mind is filled with anticipation. Anticipating two weekends in a row without snow. Anticipating more than three warm days in a row. Anticipating clean roads without construction barricades every few feet. Anticipating bringing out the beloved “B” for a rally or tour. But mostly, as I sit here and put these words together, I am in major anticipation of our first grandchild.
It is currently 8:30 p.m. and our daughter-in-law reports to the hospital in six hours to start the procedure of inducing labor. 2:30 in the morning. Really? After 9 months, would giving her another six hours make that big of a difference? Why can’t babies adhere to a normal schedule? But I digress.
Anyway, Sandy and I can’t wait to meet the little fella. Yes, I said “fella”. A boy! A grandson! Buybuy Baby has now replaced Moss Motors as our depository of spare dollars. But I guarantee the first toy car he receives will be a British roadster. You can never spark that sports car desire too early. Victor, get a membership application ready.
So, by the time you read this, there will be another little person in our family. Someone to cherish. Someone to love. Someone to nurture. Someone to share the open road with. Will a diaper bag fit in the boot?
Drive safe my friends,
Corrections & Clarifications
Accuracy is important to the CMGC Driveline staff and I want to correct mistakes promptly. It was noted in last month's issue of Driveline that the Postcard photo of Reinout Vogt with Emma was submitted by Ralph Arata. We regret the omission.
