MGA Guru Gone Mobile...

As of last report we were cut a bit short working on Chuck McCallum's MGA in Plainfield, IL. Happy to report that we got it running and tuned up, and took it for a test drive before we left town. Nice 5-speed. With a bit of time to spare I also got the vacuum pipe installed on my new (old) Lucas distributor, and hope it may improve fuel economy a bit.

Then we rolled back up to Victor's place in Crystal Lake to reassemble his early MGB gearbox, and we were joined by Chuck McCallum who wanted to see how it goes. Nothing unusual, all back together in one day, and another tech session under the table.

Heading north on June 2nd we got to visit an old friend Allen Greco in rural Waupaca, WI. This is the bloke living across the street in Warrenville who sold me my current MGA in 1977, yes more than 40 years ago (time flies). Having been renovating a 100-year-old farm house, he had just moved into it a few weeks earlier. Big old house and a large "barn" laid out with space for at least five walk-around cars and workshop space. Solid building, a little rough and needing some finishing work. While there I took a bit of time to debug a loose connection to get my MGA intermittent flashers working.

Still heading north, we got turned down for an oil change by a Walmart in Superior, WI. Continuing north we crossed into Canada and landed in Thunder Bay, Ontario on June 6. We had a short visit with John Colosimo to check out his toys, a TR6, VW Beetle (owned since new), Volvo 1800E I (fuel injected), bug eye Sprite, MGB, and a couple more Volvo P1800's.

Then we were tied up four days with "Back To The Bay 2018", the 28h Annual Lake Superior Vintage Sports Car Rendezvous. We had a tour of Russ Wnazuk Garage with a rather large assortment of vintage race cars (mostly American stuff). Then a tour of Duke Hunt Historical Museum (and Russ Wanzak Automotive Display). There were lots of historical artifacts and some antique farm machinery, and lots or restored race cars (an odd combination in one place).

Barn dance night near Thunder Bay

The primary reason for our presence in Thunder Bay was that I was drafted to do a tech session titled "Keeping Them On The Road" for the convention participants. Not unusual that the 90-minute presentation filled the room with interested bodies, ran overtime and had to continue in the car park. That was followed by a barn dance in the evening, jolly good entertainment, but continuing the afternoon tech session well into the evening.

Starting off the vintage car rally rally

On Saturday the 9th I was assisting with launch of about 60 cars for a morning road rally, some of which were returning by the time we got them all out. Mid-day had us at the vintage car show (about 100 cars) for a few hours, continuing the ongoing tech session where I got to tweak the carbs on a couple of MGs. In the evening a banquet and awards party, including (yes) some more tech discussions.

We did manage to get the oil changed before we left Thunder Bay, shunning Walmart in favor of a quick lube place as a matter of expediency. Driving east along the north side of Lake Superior, we blundered into a visit with Don Wallenius in Sault Ste Marie with the opportunity to check out his late model MGB, MGA 1500 Coupe, MGA 1600-MK-II roadster, and
