Road layout in Newfoundland (3000 miles?)
(Continued from page 16)
NS (and PEI) later. By mid-day on the 19th we rolled into Cape Breton at the east end of NS for a BBQ party with Atlantic Chapter, NEMGTR.

Cape Spear, Netherlands, farthest point east in North America

Next day on the 20th we hopped a ferry for a seven-hour ride cross the Gulf of St Lawrence from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port-Aux-Basques, Newfoundland. This was followed by a week touring around the island. We discovered that the one British car club we were after had been defunct for several years but did find a touring group for sports cars in St Johns that has the participation of a number of vintage British cars. While visiting a few friends we also found a couple of shops that work on vintage British cars, making the island-hopping side trip worthwhile.

Diesel repair on Trans Labrador Highway

On morning of the 29th we were on the north peninsula of Newfoundland catching a ferry for a 90-minute stormy slosh back across the Gulf from St Barbe, NL to Blanc Sablon, QC (the very eastern tip of that province). From there a right turn to go a few hours north up the east coast of Labrador to Port Hope Simpson, followed by a six-hour cruise west on mostly gravel roads of the Trans Labrador Highway to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL (with one short stop to fix a fuel line on a stranded semi-truck).

Interesting side road near Carbonear, NL

Sitting in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL on the 30th dashing off this report, and hoping it gets delivered in time for publication. Truth be known, the only reason we're up here is because, well, there's a road here, and of course someone said it couldn't be done.

Grates Cove, NL (view is worth the drive)
