"The Boss's Car"
After 35 years credit at Chevron I was VERY ready for retirement. A great company with great people but the job was very demanding 100% of the time. Even on true vacation days it was hard to avoid working during them!
There were simply too many other things to do in my life not the least of which was more time with the MGB and the Chicago club!
While working it seemed as though there was never enough time in the day to do all that was required. I also joined the 3AM club where I would wake up and remember those items I either didn't get done or forgot to do. On the Jo Davies or Wine/Cheese/Beer weekend tours I would wake up Sundays and tell Susan that we should skip the final luncheon and get home so I could "mentally" prep for Monday morning.
The job was demanding but I worked for a good company with good people. I never had a supervisor that I didn't like. Mike Jennings was one of those people. He was always there to encourage, break the ice with a joke or just listen. Mike and I retired about the same time and we have stayed in touch. Mike and his wife Carol live in Bel Air, MD just NE of Baltimore. Susan and I have stayed with them on our visits.
In June Susan and I went to England to her family's reunion which occurs every other year. I came back after a few weeks but Susan stayed on to spend time with her mom and to visit friends she has not seen in awhile. I got home, got the itch and took a drive north. I stayed with Mike & Carol on route to my cousins on LI. It's great to see Mike but it's a treat to see his 1964 Austin Healey 3000. The car is concours and Mike has a room full of awards to prove it.
The car is an early Mk 3 which Mike bought in 1974 with blemishes and 80k miles on it. In the early 90s he pulled the entire drive train off for complete rebuild. The engine/trans/overdrive is 6 feet long and weighs 750 lbs, yikes! All of the car's numbers match and the VIN numbers are correct in accordance with the British Motor Heritage Trust certificate.
Body work and paint followed in the early 2000s. All the car's components i.e. brakes, steering, fuel pump, carbs, instruments and springs & shocks have been rebuilt. The rear axle was rebuilt and a brand new walnut facia installed. 95% of the interior, panels, seat covers are all original. Mike's Healey is an absolute beauty and it placed third in the national Austin Healey meet held in Gettysburg, PA.
Yes, the car is a Healey and not an MG but I think I can forgive my 'ol boss for that!
