Chicagoland MG Club: Driveline March 2020

At the February meeting there was some confusion when the club awards were being announced. Exactly what was Cream Crackers? The award is for a member who made a ‘contribution to the MG community,’ this year being Melisa Gonzales. The term itself comes from the livery (more on this in a sec) of the very successful three car race team from 1935, The Cream Crackers #1, 2, and 3. In 1936 the team was reorganized and called Cream Cracker, without the s. Both teams were from the MG Car Club and not the factory, although Abingdon did supply ample support.

The paint scheme (livery) of both teams was quite similar, a light tan or cream on the body and brown on the wings and scuttles, or as we would say in proper American, fenders and running boards. The same colours (oops, my British snuck in) as used on most of the bonnet octagon emblems. The color combo is named after the famous biscuit, Jacob’s Cream Crackers, a smallish square cracker, tan in color with brown ‘toasting’ marks. They have been around since 1885. And the last time that I tried some I think that they were of the original vintage. But what’s the proper beverage to go with Cream Crackers at high tea? Not tea, but Old Speckled Hen. Or Ol’ Speckled ‘un. See Library Muse from August 2018 for more on that.

The Cosmic Career of John DeLorean
By Hillel Levin, 1983, 327 pages, hardbound

Reviewed by Lakeshore on Amazon: Self-made man gone awry “From Hero to Zero. Unbelievable that the DeLorean Automobile travesty was allowed by Ireland’s government and that John DeLorean’s mistakes in his car and his factory were exactly what he chastised General Motors for. Not a man I would have gone into business with.”

Donated by Roger Goebert.
