Abingdon '98 Weekend
by Jim Evans
Over 50 cars registered for our annual ABINGDON
weekend this year. The weather in western Illinois was exceptionally good
and contributed to an enjoyable weekend for all.
This year, one Chicago area caravan drove a new route, along IL RT 71 and
the Illinois River and sundry other roads, that was enjoyed by all. Although
a little longer than the Rt 34 drive, it offered more open roads and scenic
views than Rt 34.
Our car show was divided between a popular choice group and a concours group
for the first time. This allowed our judges to focus their attention on
a smaller group of cars and improved the quality of the judging. Tom Josefek
and Don Gottlinger headed up the judging crew. Trophies were awarded in
several classes for popular vote entrants.
On Saturday afternoon, after a long absence from our program, we returned
to the streets of downtown Abingdon for our famous "gymkhana".
With the help of local police and the town council, the street was cleared
and Barney Gaylord laid out an excellent autocross course using road cones
supplied by Abingdon officials. A local bar added to the fun by setting
up its grill so that sidewalk diners could munch their burger while cars
ran the course. Approximately 15 drivers competed. Trophies were awarded
after the Saturday evening buffet dinner for both car show and gymkhana
entrants; some attendees traveled to the restored pioneer community of Bishop
Hill as part of their weekend.
Car show: Best of Show, popular vote: John & Joyce Schmale, 1935 MG

Gymkhana: 1st Reinout Vogt, 2nd Barney Gaylord, 3rd Dino Perez
