We ran almost the same route but ‘backwards’, i.e. counter clockwise to the one described here. To be the deviants that we, are we went from Annapolis to Van Buren to Alton, then back tracked to Van Buren and on to Ellsinore but otherwise it was the same basic route, the difference is in the detail of course.

The photos show four of the participants cars at a check point that we came across around 2pm. No drivers or navigators to be found, just the cars. We think they were having a “siesta” at the local cantina, but we just carried on, being dedicated to the task in hand.

There were 5 MGBs (1 with a V8), 2 Midgets and our TR6 for the starters. As you can see from the results not all finished. A true test of endurance, car, driver, navigator and am added measure of perseverance! We crossed six wet fords and a few dry ones and saw some other interesting things, including two dead snakes on the road, one live deer etc. No AKA 47s being polished or chained up alligators, as we have done in the past this year! Fortunately we didn’t make any major mistakes or come across undriveable fords or private gated off roads or even roads that didn’t actually exist — like we have in the past — so that was great. We did have to make a few minor course adjustments as we went along after we missed a
turn or so, but nothing in the ‘oh shit’ department. However particularly after it go dark we hit problems. We couldn’t find the road names/numbers and so elected to add a few miles to take a more labelled route home. Next time we need one of those police searchlights!
Now on to the results:
1. Bob Strathman & co-driver = 467.7 adjusted miles
2. Stephen Skegg & Jaysen Vana = 472 miles
3. Andy Ackerman & Lee Fox = 476.6 adjusted miles
*subtracted roughly 20 miles for going back 10 miles to assist Bob B and Bob H - no MG left behind!
4. Pete & Carolyn Westbay = 478 miles
5. Allen Decker & co-driver = 542.8 adjusted miles
6. Bob Bentzinger & Bob Horzmann = DNF mechanical issues
7. Stanley & Bonnie Wagner = DNF odometer issues
8. Glen & Andrew Frasca = DNF (but not car related)
All in all a fun day, highly recommended.
Cheers,
