1999 Vintage Racing Events to Attend
continued
Two local vintage racing
groups run the "local" tracks of Blackhawk Farms, Elkhart Lake,
Gingerman and Grattan. These are the Midwest Council of Sports Car
Clubs (MC) and the Vintage Sports Car Drivers Association (VSCDA).
At MC events, functions like corner worker, timing and scoring,
and tech inspection are staffed by members and guests. MC runs a
number of racing classes from showroom stock, GT classes, open wheel
and vintage, both wheel to wheel and autocross (solo). These events
are low-key, with most racers coming for the racing itself--not
really for the show. This is truly club racing and the group is
well known for its helpful camaraderie, its support of drivers new
to racing and for some downright competitive racing! (See the announcement
elsewhere in this issue for MCıs FREE racing / autocross school
in March.)
VSCDA events are more
"professionally" run, with hired regional SCCA corner workers, and
a very small paid permanent staff; but it retains a "club" feel
with a board of directors made up of racers. The cars are virtually
all vintage, ranging from a vertical radiator group which shows
up periodically, to some "exhibition" groups made up of recently
retired NASCAR hardware, Ferrari 550's and other exotic hardware.
In between is about every car you ever read about or dreamed of,
depending on the event. Many of the events are well attended. I
believe that the Indianapolis Raceway Park charity event last year
drew 50,000 spectators. Most events are small, with the paddocks
open to visitors and the racers getting lots of track time.
