The original style rear seal for the early 1500 gearbox had a wide leather oil seal and a felt dust seal. The steel cup shell fits over the outside of the gearbox tail housing. The seal Inside Diameter is 1-3/8" (nominal), same as the propshaft front yoke pilot diameter that slides into the gearbox bi-metal bushing. For modern reproduction parts the leather is likely changed to some form of rubber seal.
