American LeMans Series - 500 Race
Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, July 4-7, 2002
For those of you not fortunate enough to have been at Road America on Sunday, I’d like to report that Steven Knight and Mel Hawkins #11 Nighthawk MG Lola 675 LMP took third in its class, despite being out for about a quarter of the enduro for, yes, another fire. This one, not as bad, was spotted early by the corner workers, who communicated to the driver by holding up fire bottles (extinguishers) to get the car into the pits. During the post-race interviews, Mel Hawkins talked about having three fires in the last two races.
Intersport MG Lola (#37) and Nighthawk MG Lola (#11) in paddock
The #37 blue and red MG Lola of the Intersport team started late and was out for most of the race. We had been by their paddock before lunch, and it seemed that they were having some problems with the motor then. But the car was fast when it was running. Their #30 Lola/Judd, in the LMP 900 class, took fourth overall, after the #2, #1, and #38 Audi R8s.
It was great fun, as is any race at Road America- what a venue! If you are ever in the region of Elkhard Lake on a race weekend, don’t miss it. We will be returning in less than two weeks to camp with the Chicagoland MG Club and cheer on some of our club members racing in Groups 2 and 8 of the Brian Redman International Challenge. And we will be back again the second weekend of August to work corners for Midwestern Council’s Crystal Challenge. If anyone in the Chicago-Milwaukee-Madison area interested, volunteers are always welcome- email us at snyder@chicagolandmgclub.com for information.
