The Rally Corner

That's It, It's Over!

The Official Driving Season of the Chicagoland MG Club is over, the last competitive events took place in October, the Championship is decided, and there'll no more group driving events until Spring.

The Championship was contested until the last minute in the last rally, The Halloween Rally. The turn-out for the rally wasn't too high with 7 MG's, and 2 Miata's but all contestants for the season title were there. After the Siemens Autocross, Mike Olsen and Kelvin Palmer were still in the running for 1st place while Joanne Trowbridge and Don Anderson where challenging each other for 2nd. In the navigator class Richard Klein had an almost insurmountable lead over Barb McCutcheon, but Vicki Palmer and Diana Tonry where in contesting for 2nd place also. All showed up and all were in the starting line for The Halloween Rally. Larry Czachor and his sister had put together the most creative rally I've ever participated in. I really hope that someone will report on it separately, because if any driving event this year deserves a good report, it was this one. At the end, when the clock ticked away its minutes it all became a fact, Team Olsen/Klein checked in at the finish a hair too late, and Kelvin Palmer passed Mike in the Championship Standing. Richard held off Barb by just one point to secure the navigator title. The further standings are as follows:

Please take a minute to go over these standings, call me at (847) 342-9804, if you would like to see the complete score sheet. If by next newsletter, I have received no corrections, the preliminary stamp will be removed and the Champions are to be recognized at the February Annual Business and Awards Meeting.>

I already mentioned the Siemens Autocross. It was a beautiful fall day, and we had 21 participants, in 12 MG B's, 1 Midget, and 3 prepared class MG's. Kelvin bought out his race car, on a trailer, an unique opportunity to see the beautifully prepared car in full action. I laid out the cones such that the course would be longer than normally, a little bit slower and a little less favorable towards the faster cars. All that was indeed achieved and we had a duration of about 1 minute per run. Unfortunately I used up all 100 newly acquired Club Cones, and the course became a little bit (too for some drivers) confusing, and many DNF (Did Not Finish) were recorded. The event was won by Steve Benni, who this time outclassed his car owner (and father, I don't know what we did to the family hierarchy?) by 8 sec. Bob Brownlow was 2nd while Bill Mennell piloted his very potent MGB to 3rd. The complete results were:

We can make our MG's ready for the winter season. For most of us that means storage, for a few real MG spirited members, that means a little extra preparation in order to make it trouble free through the bad weather months. Please look around you at the next meeting and talk to these few diehards, they may need the encouragement, have lots of experience we can all learn from, and in general deserve the recognition.

As always; looking at the car in the garage over the winter is OK, working and cleaning the car in the spring is fine too, running errands or commuting to work in the summer is great, but nothing beats driving your MG together with so many other MG's to your CMGC events. Take Advantage of the Very, Very Last Opportunity of this Season -

the Fall Tune Down Party.
